Applying for a Grant

Once you have identified a source who provides grants, be sure that you fully understand the goal of that organization in offering the funding.  As you prepare your grant proposal or application you need to demonstrate in the document that you plan to meet their objectives.

In some cases you will be given an application or form to fill out and return.  In other cases a document “Request for Grant Proposal” will be presented to you outlining the requirements and goals and objectives of the grant and you will need to prepare and submit a written document, called a full grant proposal.  Be sure in this grant proposal to address all the components of the Request for Grant Proposal; generally the requirements for completing the grant proposal is spelled out in the document and serves as a guideline for preparing the proposal.

Whether you are creating a grant proposal document or filling out an application grant forms, you should always prepare and submit a cover letter.  Your cover letter is you first opportunity to catch the reviewer’s eye and convenience them that you are the best candidate for the grant.  In your cover letter include information on your company, your project, how the money will be used and explain how your project is a perfect fit to achieve their objectives.
Searching for a grant to meet your needs will involve a lot of research and reading.

Once you have determined that a grant will suit your needs or the needs of your organization/agency, the grant writer should carefully review the requirements and qualifications spelled out in the document.  Be sure to address as thoroughly as possible all areas of concern identified in the Request for Grant Proposal.  Pay particular attention to your formatting.  Be sure that your document easily identifies and presents the necessary facts and document components to support qualification for the grant.  You may be asked to provide specific goals of your agency and specifically how the funding will be used and what is expected to be achieved.  These goals should match up with the grantor’s objectives in providing the funding.  You need to have a way to measure your achievements as they relate to these goals and demonstrate this in your grant proposal.  You will have to demonstrate that you or your staff have the necessary background or qualifications to perform the work for which you are requesting funding.  You can include biographies or resumes of key personnel, including past successes in the field of study.  You may also be required to prove financial stability.

Documentation is requested to demonstrate your capabilities and that you are the best individual or company for the grantor to invest in to achieve their own objectives.  You need to present this package of information in a logical format where sections are clearly marked and identified and the person reviewing the application or grant document can quickly identify and review pertinent sections.  Be sure to review, proof read and edit your completed package for content, formatting and ease of understanding before submitting it. The small details and ease of document review for the grantor can make the difference between being awarded the requested funding and losing the requested funding.
